2008 Season Finale for NATPA

The final 2008 regional National Antique Tractor Pullers Association pull and Championship was held on the Boone County Fairgrounds in Coumbia, Missouri on March 28 and 29, 2008. For antique tractor pullers who have made NATPA their association for competition, this annual weekend full of activities is one they anticipate from year to year.

Friday morning's drivers' meeting included a welcome from the Columbia Convention and Visitor's Bureau where their representative expressed appreciation for the NATPA and the return of the pullers year after year for their Championship weekend. After the necessary reminders to pullers concerning safety and rules, the pull got under way with the 2500# class hooking up to the Hot Foot Sled II out of Iowa and the 5500# classes lining up with the Old Busch Sled out of Illinois. And the NATPA Championship weekend of antique tractor pulling had begun!

Though for many pullers the Championship weekend is the culmination of a season on a specific tractor (or tractors), for one puller in particular Friday's hook was a "debut". Walter Crafton of Shipman,Illinois made three good hooks on Friday with a "new" ride, a 1956 Ford 960. Crafton who has pulled both John Deere and Oliver tractors with NATPA decided it was time to cut down on the weight he was hauling and throwing at a pull. The best solution to giving up pulling all together was to down size the tractor. The change of Crafton seemed to go well on Friday as he finished first in 4000 Division II and in the top ten in other two hooks. Not a bad introduction to his vintage Ford puller! (Editor note: At Princeton the Fousts pulled a Ford having come to the same conclusion as Crafton about size. Is it a sign of things to come that as the pullers begin to add up more years, they may start thinking lighter tractors? The Martins and the Kroms may have been trendsetters with NATPA!)

Several pullers came who were only competing on Friday due to the qualification hooks necessary to participate in the Championship. Competition at Saturday's end of season pull is limited to members of NATPA who have pulled at least at three events (Friday's Regional points pull counted). Several pullers had not only made the three required events but had managed to travel to all of the events in the 2007-2008 season. With the weather problems faced by several of the pulls, that was quite an accomplishment. Weather had played havoc with the Ogallala, Nebraska pull in December, the Princeton, Indiana pull in February and the Tallmadge, Ohio pull in early March. When the end of March came, Arthur Forrest and wife Maxine had made all the pulls on the NATPA starting with the summer pull in Mendon, Illinois to the Championship in Columbia, Missouri. Several other pullers/tractors missed only one pull over the season. Those included Jack and Justin Dodge, Carl Davis, James McQuoid, and Ron Brokaw. It was quite an accomplishment for these men (and some of their wives who went along for the ride). It was also quite an investment of time and money for all involved. But whether they had pulled at every NATPA event or only a couple, everyone involved was eager to take to the track for one more chance to take a first.

Most pullers hope to leave Columbia, Missouri with more than they came with. They hope to win money, capture a point's championship, or take home a plaque. The "more" that Sherman Wilshusen of Polk, Nebraska, left with was pieces. Wilshusen left the track with his tractor in multiple pieces instead of the single unit he arrived with. On the bright side, his tractor fit better on the trailer he and Delmar Rathje had hauled from Nebraska. When you have a come-apart on the track, you have to look on the bright side!

Besides two full days of tractor pulling, there was also the annual NATPA business meeting where trustees and rules came before the membership for a vote. That meeting was held on Friday night where trustees were re-elected and rules stayed the same. Some new weight classes were added in Division I and Division II for the next year.

Gene Sellers, long time NATPA member and puller from Trout Run, Pennsylvania announced he was planning to shift his focus from traveling quite so much and that this would be his last weekend of competition with NATPA. Always a tough competitor, even those he periodically beats were sorry to hear him plan to retire from the circuit. He was given an opportunity to say a formal farewell on Saturday morning during the drivers' meeting.

As is always true of Saturday's Championship pull, there is a special intensity about the final pull of the season. A number of points' championships were on the line as the day got underway. Competitors were figuring where they had to finish (and anyone else who had a shot at coming out on top in points) to take home the coveted top prize in their class. For many of the pullers, 2008 had been their first shot at a point's win since they had started pulling with NATPA. Several pull offs also added to the keen interest of the pullers.

Track work was again in the hands of the FFA from Silex, Missouri. Volunteers both on and off the track kept things flowing smoothly for the two-day event.

When the last hook was completed, there had been a total of 618 hooks in the two days at the Boone County Fairgrounds and it was time to get ready to celebrate the end of the season at the annual banquet. For many pullers the banquet has a bit of nostalgia connected. Those familiar faces that pullers had spent months seeing every couple of weekends would not be around as much. It would be a long until the next season gets underway. The good news was that the NATPA summer pull is just a few months away!
